Box Beach is a secluded beach that is located in Tomaree National Park, just a short Rd, Nelson Bay - Corlette NSW 2315/Box Beach, Shoal Bay NSW 2315/@-32.7245253,152.165935,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b7381537a9d4da9:0x1d845a24549a814a!2m2!1d152.1667844!2d-32.7168827!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b73841c9db41c19:0x4c1a8404cec8febd!2m2!1d152.1825952!2d-32.7313629!3e0 5 minute drive from Shoal Bay in Port Stephens. As it is located off the beaten track and away from the tourist destinations, it is mainly used by locals for swimming, surfing and fishing - but please be aware that that there are no flags or lifeguard service, so swimming is at your own risk.

When you drive down the road to the small car park, you will see the entrance to the beach and signage which explains the volcanic origins of the area. The rich red and brown hues which make up the rocky outcrops and headlands of Box Beach originated from two volcanos that were in the area, approximately 300 million years ago!



The walk to Box Beach is 150 metres down a sandy pathway, with thick bushland either side. Ensure you stop along the way and listen to the range of bird calls in the trees, as native finches and birds call to each other to announce your arrival. On my visit there were also a number of rustles in the undergrowth, so please be aware to look out for snakes if you visit in the hot summer months. Brown snakes have been spotted here!



Box Beach itself is 350 metres long, making it a relaxing beach to take a walk along and soak up the views. Rock fishing is also popular at either end of the beach, but please take heed of the signs to wear life jackets and see the Port Stephens Marine Park sanctuary zone map , for restrictions in this Habitat Protection Zone.





If you are feeling energetic, there is a coastal walk through Tomaree National Park that you can access from Box Beach. To find it, just walk back up the road from the car park and you will see the signed bush track that runs from left to right across the road. See below for a map.



Box Beach is just one of many quiet beaches to explore, which are part of the Tomaree National Park. The best part of tracking down these secluded beaches is just that - they are secluded. Many beaches in the Port Stephens region get very busy over the summer months, so if you are looking for a quiet spot to lie under a beach umbrella and read a book, then you can't go past these little gems. Just don't tell too many people....
