Essential reading for David Bowie fans
Bowie - Album by Album

Bowie – Album by Album has been thoroughly researched by music critic Paolo Hewitt. It's a biography of David Bowie's musical career and his 29 albums including his 2016 critically acclaimed Blackstar, which was released just two days before his death.

There is a chapter for each album he released over his lifetime with illustrations that chronicle his changing personas. Interspersed throughout the pages are quotes, mostly from David himself, and they are chosen perfectly to give you some insight into his personal thoughts and motivations. I discovered he was well read with a restlessly creative mind.

"Some of them I think were sketchy ideas that I didn't work on hard enough. That didn't quiet cut it. It's like painting really, I mean, not every painting that you do is gonna be good but you've done them and there you are. I tend to look at albums rather like that. I admit some of the ideas didn't come off, but there's some good work in there somewhere, though. There's a logical sequence… I can just about see the year that I wrote that album, or I can say "Yes, that describes that environment and that year very well", I think. Which is very good, soft of what I set out to do", David Bowie sums up what many artists goes through in 1978.

Each album is described within the context of the time in which it was recorded and its resulting influence and legacy. He explored different genres from glam rock, rock, pop, blue-eyed soul, jazz and electronica. He enjoyed experimenting with different personas and his nonconformity allowed other people to accept themselves.

"Bowie's stature rested on his enormous talent as a songwriter, his artistic courage, his drive to experiment, his mission to expand rock's boundaries to encompass theatre and literature. His multimedia and multi-genre career had seen him embraced by fans from widely different backgrounds, Bowie's appeal had started on the council estates and stretched right through to academics", Paolo sums David Bowie perfectly.

The book was originally published in 2012 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his breakthrough album, The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust. This edition includes 160 colour photographs and includes his final album.

At the back of the book is a full discography covering all his albums, personnel, cover art, songs and notes.

Bowie – Album and Album is an essential addition to every David Bowie fan's collection.

Bowie – Album by Album is available in paperback from your favourite bookseller.
