I like to participate in life rather than be a spectator. Music, dancing, theatre, travelling, food, cycling and walking are some of my passions. Writing is an enjoyable pastime that allows me to share my experiences.
Texas barbecue-style smokehouse meats lovingly cooked in a handmade smoker are the specialty of Bovine and Swine in Emu Plains. Early in 2019 the head "pit master" Wes Griffiths brought his love of authentic Texas style barbecue to the western suburbs after three years in Newtown.
Dining in is definitely a no frills experience with very simple decor and meals served on paper and in takeaway containers. There is no alcohol license and the only drinks available are bottled water and soft drinks. The menu is simple, you just choose what meat you want and how much, as well as a combination of side dishes. The plates are great value and we found the $35 meat platter for one comprising 200g brisket, 200g pork belly and coleslaw was enough for lunch for us two with the addition of a potato salad side.
The meats are tender and succulent with an interesting but not overly smoky flavour. A loyal band of followers ensure to get in early in order not to miss out in their favourite cuts. Children are welcome and there are high chairs but there is no specific kids menu. There is parking available at the back or on the street out front. Bovine and Swine is somewhere to pop into for a quick tasty meal rather than for a special occasion.
