Tucked away off the Princes Highway, among industrial complexes, is the newest addition to the Bourke St Bakery empire, at Kirrawee. Shire residents no longer have to brave the world north of Tom Ugly's Bridge for exquisite sourdoughs and pastries.



Bourke St Bakery is known for its rustic-style products made with real ingredients just like you would make at home (if you knew how, and had lots of time) and this is reflected in the taste - no industrial bread improvers and custard powders here, everything is the real deal.

If you are hankering for something savoury, don't go past their signature Pork and Fennel sausage roll. It was a revelation the first time I tried one: juicy sweet pork mince with a sweet anise flavour from the fennel. This is definitely not the sausage roll of your childhood canteen. Their Beef Pie is also delicious, full of chunky beef pieces wrapped in gorgeous flaky pastry. It met with the firm approval of my dad, who is a pie afficionado.

I can never go into the bakery without coming out with something sweet. I can recommend the lemon curd tart and almond praline croissant, which tastes great gently warmed up in the oven at home. I have sampled croissants all over France and I can say that the croissants at Bourke Street are as good as (if not superior to) those I had in France.





If you are having a catch up with friends or just want a leisurely brunch, take advantage of Bourke St's outdoor seating, where you can enjoy a croissant and coffee while listening to birdsong and the distant hum of industry.





Bourke St Bakery also take catering orders and can provide mini beef pies and sausage rolls - perfect for kids' parties. And to make things easier for harried parents, they also sell large rectangular sponge slabs ready for you to slap on some buttercream and M&Ms for your kid's next birthday.
