There are various components to the art of rock climbing, but the single unifying aspect is usually the reassuring presence of ropes. But for those who part-take in short climbs on natural or artificial boulders, there is no rope - and nothing standing between the climber and the harsh reality of gravity.

In St Leonards, Climb Fit offers a variety of facilities for rock climbers interested in bouldering. With a designated area for bouldering, there are over 90 boulder problems. Every newcomer to the climbing centre is required to sign a release form

There is an equivalent in St Peters - Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym, which boasts 2900m2 of climbing walls, rendering it Australia's biggest climbing centre. Open from Monday to Sunday, adults can enter for $16, with an additional fee of $10 for anyone needing to hire equipment.

For those of you more interested in experiencing bouldering against a spectacular backdrop, there are various locations around New South Wales for outdoor climbs, including Ebor Gorge, Mt Boyce, and the Hawkesbury River.

Although the grading system of bouldering is notoriously difficult to adjudge, there is provision made for the most advanced climbers. Australian runs a series of competitions, including the NSW Series and the Australian Nationals.
