Bottle gourd which is now making an appearance at the local vegetable market is renowned for a lot of health benefits. Belonging to the cuke fam, 92% of it has water. It is also a rich source of vitamin C, K and calcium. What better way to start your day than with a nice cooling glass of this juice. Throw in some ice cubes and you are sure to have the right start to your mornings.

The health benefits of this great juice
It helps in maintaining a healthy heart and brings down bad cholesterol levels. The juice is also beneficial for diabetic patients as it stabilises the blood sugar level and maintains blood pressure. The best time to have it is in the morning. A small glass would just be perfect. Also, one needs to consume the juice immediately as it oxidises quite fast.

Bottle gourd juice is widely used for weight loss. It is packed with fibre which helps in keeping you full for longer and it is also low in calories.

Get your act together

Note: Bottle gourd juice should always be consumed fresh. Peel and gourd and try a bit of flesh before blending, it shouldn't taste bitter. If it does, discard it. Also, it is advised to have bottle gourd juice alone and not mixed with other vegetables.

1 cup Bottle gourd. (Peeled and cut into cubes)
1/4 cup cucumber (Peeled and cut into cubes)
1 inch ginger (For the great flavour)
The juice of 1 lime
A handful of mint and coriander leaves
Pepper and salt to taste

1. In a blender put your cup of peeled and chopped gourd.
2. Add pretty much all your ingredients, except for the lime juice and salt.

3. Add 1 cup of water. Chilled would be perfect for a hot day.
4. Give it a whirl. Now comes the tedious bit of straining the juice from the pulp. It is worth every drop though.
5. The result of the straining , is a clear green juice. Add your lime juice and salt to it . Garnish with some fresh mint or coriander.

The best bit is that it is delicious!
