Free outdoor art
There is a treasure trove of freely accessible outdoor art on display around Brisbane at the moment, with the Brisbane Street Art Festival, Maiwar (a contemporary art program of First Nations' art and culture) and Botanica, an outdoor gallery of installations in the City Botanic Gardens.

There are 16 installations scattered around the gardens. Some are best enjoyed in the sunshine of day while others really only shine at night. So, Botanica really needs two visits or one starting in the late afternoon and going into the evening.

The exhibition is open daily midday till 8pm with extended hours till 10pm on Friday 13 April. There are afternoon art walks at 3pm and twilight art walks at 6pm.

Take a guided art walk

Or you can just grab a program and children's discovery trail map from the stands at the Alice St entrance to the gardens and do it yourself! An interesting addition to the self-guided experience is the Unearthed project by Natasha Billing, who teamed with a game developer, Joshua Textor, to develop an app you can download to your smartphone to interact with seven sites of historical interest around the gardens. The app is available for free from the app store. Kids would love searching the gardens for the sites, marked by a decal on the ground.

Hosted by Brisbane City Council, Botanica is one of many events of Festival 2018 happening in parallel with the Commonwealth Games. What a great excuse to get out and enjoy our beautiful city gardens!
