Western Australia's love affair with craft beer has seen over 50 microbreweries open their doors (and some close them soon after) since 1990. One microbrewery however is sure to leave you scratching your head as to where it actually is.
Boston Brewery is located just east of Denmark in Western Australia... yes, you read that correctly. For many who don't know their country towns it seems rather impossible for a brewery to be built in an American city within a prosperous Scandinavian country right on the doorstep of Australia. But alas it is possible!
Once you get over the geographical mind games you can start to appreciate the brewery itself. The first room upon entering is actually the Willoughby Park Winery cellar door but behind this is the cavernous open plan room that is Boston Brewery.
To find possibly the largest brewery restaurant in WA outside of the Margaret River area was surprising to say the least, but judging by how many people were there I can most certainly see why. The place is very, very popular.
The other rarity about this brewery is the brewers are girls, the only such brewery in WA. The beer itself is good without being exciting, although I didn't get to try the single batch as I had to drive.
One unique feature about Boston Brewery is they brew a beer for the beer amateurs. A normal, no frills lager for those who aren't into the wonderful world of craft beer.
The food was a different story. Relatively well priced, big servings and very good quality. I had the burger of course and it was impressive to see a nice, thick meat patty (presumably locally sourced) topped with pickles, caramelized onions, tomato and other must haves.
The chips were devoured too. Thick cut, crispy chips with a perfect amount of salt and what can only be described as the best aoili I've had to date. The food was more than well worth the price.
They also do woodfired pizzas and other typical pub meals, all of which you can watch being prepared in the open walled kitchen.
All in all Boston Brewery is a great spot to go for lunch if you're visiting or driving through the Great Southern region. the huge modern restaurant, decent drinks and superb quality foods make for good times in a relaxed, country style environment.
