Spring into action

This Saturday 17th of September, enjoy all that the Boroondara Sustainable Living Festival has to offer: from growing veggies and keeping backyard chooks, to Wild Action's native animal shows and 'speed dating' a sustainability expert, there's sure to something for everyone!


The fun kicks off bright and early at 8am at Patterson Reserve, Auburn Road, Hawthorn East (Melway 59 E3). Entry is by gold coin donation.

The event programme is highlighted with great interactive activities, informative displays and fun opportunities to engage with special guests:

  • Wild Action native animal show

    Meet Chris Humfrey and get up close and personal with his amazing collection of native animals, including 'Gonzo' the tawny frogmouth, 'Titch' the swamp wallaby, 'Gizmo' the grey-headed flying fox and many more.

  • Speed date a sustainable designer

    Bring your questions, concepts, photos and plans and get real free advice from a sustainability designer. Click here to select a 15 minute time slot. Please note places are strictly limited.

  • Speed date an energy efficiency and solar expert

    Got questions about energy efficiency, solar panels or LED lighting? Click here to book a session to get free energy advice to make your home more energy efficient and comfortable.


  • Worms not waste

    Learn about worm farming and composting, pick up free worm juice plant fertiliser and find out how to order a discounted worm farm or compost bin.

  • Feathered friends

    Meet some friendly backyard chooks and learn how to care for your own lively egg-producing friends.

  • Incredible edibles

    Quiz experts about growing your own fruit and vegetables. Get in early to pick up a free seedling.


  • Green cleaning

    A green cleaning expert from Fresh Clean Green will take you through four simple steps to achieve a clean, safe and healthy home.

  • Lively Gypsy tunes

    Melbourne quartet Continental Drift will entertain the crowd

  • Plant a native

    Join the local 'friends group volunteers for a planting activity along Gardiners Creek.


  • For the kids

    Kids can make their own unique working puppet made completely out of recycled and reused materials; discover the hidden mini beasts of our waterways; and enter the 'veggie creation' competition for the chance to win a veggie noodler.
