Boot Buys at the Boot Hill Market
Every Thursday and Saturday morning the Boot Hill Market comes to life. And while most markets have a hustle and haggle feel about them, this market has an added charm that's in the name itself. From the trunk of a car, or the back of a van - that's how people sell their wares at the Boot Hill Market.

A suitable welcome to the Boot Hill Market

And in such a casual setting, you can expect that the wares are informal and eccentric. Electronics, knick-knacks, used auto parts, old fishing gear, soil-encrusted plastic plant pots and grandmas jewellery make up just a part of the spread that's to be found there.

The true joy of this place is that its all about finding your own personal treasure in the sea of interesting oddities - most of which sell for giveaway prices.

Always something different

But it's not all second-hand stuff. The new items are reasonably priced, and there are some great deals on groceries.

Save on everyday items

You will also find some unusual specialist items that won't break your budget. Some of the more interesting things I spotted were tinned turkey paste and giant tubs of wasabi mayonnaise - who knew?

There are two food stalls at the market and you can get takeaways, coffee and even slushies. Meanwhile, tables and chairs nearby provide a casual space for you to take a break from bargain hunting.

Numerous fruit stalls sell cheap fruit and vegetables at prices you will struggle to match elsewhere. One of the best deals I consistently find there are fabulous 13 kg boxes of ripe bananas for $10.

Various plants are available as well. I spotted herbs, lettuce seedlings, lilies and lots of other ornamental plants.

Aside from all these things, you will come across books, new and used clothing, bed linen, shoes, furniture and even a massage stall - and there is free parking available all along Swettenham Road.

If you would like to be a vendor yourself, simply turn up and pay on the day - $35 for a Thursday and $40 for a Saturday. For more information on the market, or becoming a vendor, visit the market website.

Above all the Boot Hill Market is a great spot to browse and, like me, I'm sure you will leave with some great bargains.
