No two visits are the same and this one turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. We headed there for some birdwatching and at this time of year, you are in for a treat. Shorebirds, migratory birds, every day birds, all there having a good time. When you park at the carpark you can take the circular boardwalk and one of the places it takes you to is the Bird Hide. There we were, binoculars in hand, standing and watching the birdlife. A man came in briefly and then went and sat on the bench just outside. Within seconds, this little head popped up from behind the sign.

And then before we knew it, we were met with this delightful little encounter with mum and babe. Babe clearly likes the corn and rice cake and secured a little bit off mum, but wanted more. Mum sort of shoved her away!

Now, we have possums in our backyard, but it is still a bit of a thrill to see them in the wild, and in daylight too. I called the man in to have a look and he told me his story. He is local and has been coming here for years. He loves the possum families and has seen several generations of possums living nearby in the trees. He occasionally brings them a corn and rice cake or a bit of fruit. He is very aware of the sensitivities of feeding wildlife and we spoke about it at length but it is as much about giving them something from time to time as it is about checking that they are well.

We loved our interaction with our Boondall Mum and Babe and we will be back to discover more another time of year. The fields have turned green even after the minimal rainfall. The mangroves extend as far as the eye reaches. The wetlands are teeming with crabs and tiny fish and of course, the birds are everywhere. Some of the ones we saw today are herons, ducks, ibises, curlews and godwits and black-winged stilts and lapwings.

It's such a lovely place and so close to Brisbane. Well worth an afternoon stroll any time or even an early morning one if you are that way inclined. Click here for a map.
