Perth's Newest (and Cutest) Coffee Cart
It was the quirky little van that first caught my attention. The good coffee was a bonus.
I'd arrived early at the Mt Lawley Bowling Cub for my shift at the Perth Comedy Festival and went outside to see if the club was selling its legendary cheese toasties. They were, but there was also something new. The three-wheeled white van almost looked like a toy car. Closer up, I realised that the winged sides were lifted to reveal a gleaming silver espresso machine. I bought a coffee from the friendly barista and thus began my acquaintance with Boom Coffee Co, one of Perth's newest coffee specialists.
The friendly barista was in fact Andy Mathieson, Boom Coffee Co's founder and director. This is a massive sea change for Andy, who spent many years working in finance and associated fields. There was an Australian-owned coffee kiosk outside his London office whose coffee was "good, really good". This plus the stress of his job soon saw him drinking quite a few cups daily and looking at overheads and markup. At the same time he was thinking about life after the corporate world. The two ideas combined and he started researching the coffee business in earnest.
Back in Australia Andy considered coffee roasting before deciding to start small with a mobile coffee business. The cute little van is a customised Piaggio Italian Ape, one of two ordered by Boom and one of the very few in Perth. As well as the cuteness factor the van can easily fit into spaces where full-sized mobile coffee vendors can't, making it perfect for functions of all sizes.
That's all very nice, I hear you say, but how about the coffee? Boom Coffee Co is concentrating on seasonal blends from WA suppliers. The coffee I enjoyed over three weeks at the Comedy Festival was Sparky Seasonal Blend from Grouch & Co ,a specialty small batch coffee roaster. Sparky's beans are from Colombia, Rwanda and Panama. This blend is best with milk and my flat white was smooth and satisfying with a rich balanced taste. Also on offer from the same roaster is 2Faced Decaf, with new varieties to be added as they become available.

Andy's second van will be arriving soon. Future plans include cold brew coffee and flash-frozen ice cream in custom flavours. Meanwhile, you'll find Boom Coffee Co at various venues around Perth. You can also book them for your function or event. Contact Andy through the website or on 0406 288 264.
