Bookshops in the City

In this time of Kindle and e-Books, and the convenience of downloading a book online anytime, the concept of a bookstore may start to be a thing of the past. But for anyone who knows the magic associated with looking for a special book (or serendipitously discovering one) and turning its pages, with the scent of ink on paper wafting in the air, the bookstore is still a place that fills one with a sense of wonder and adventure. Here are three of those special places in the city:
The Hill of Content Bookshop
Just a few metres up from the corner of Bourke and Exhibition Streets in the CBD, this book haven is spread out in an expanse of three floors. When you walk in, it's like walking into an old-fashioned wood-paneled library, it's atmosphere hushed but strangely comforting. They carry a wide range of selections here so you're very likely to find what you are looking for. And if you don't, feel free to ask any of the friendly staff if they can order it for you.
Paperback Books
This is one of those hole-in-the-wall stores, and if you walk too fast and fail to turn, you're more than likely to miss it. But like most hole-in-the-wall spots, there is a gem inside waiting to be discovered. Or, in this shop's case, several gems. Established in the 1960's, this independently-owned bookshop sells a wide range of titles, and they have a great selection of Australian non-fiction and travel books.
Embiggen Books
This is another independently-owned bookshop, opened last year across the Wheeler Centre. When you walk in, it reminds you of a sitting room (without the armchairs), with shelves along the walls filled with books, the cozy atmosphere inviting you to pick a shelf, peruse, and pull out a book. This shop carries a lot of selections on science and art, and their titles clearly convey that this a place where ideas are encouraged to abound (which is clearly living up to the shop's name). They host a variety of activities in-store, inviting writers to talk about their latest works, or just to share thoughts and discuss with their readers. Don't hesitate to ask at the counter about these.
