Books and Horses
Visit Becky's Place (Stockleigh) for a morning of fresh air, bonding with miniature horses and enjoying stories. Sessions are held every Tuesday from 9:30-11:30am.
Books with Becky is an exciting and free children's program sponsored by First Five Forever. Suitable for children under 5 years of age, weekly sessions aim to develop foundational literacy skills and encourage a passion for reading.
Becky's Place is home to 5 beautiful miniature horses, or "happiness horses" as referred to by owner Doreen. These horses play a significant role within the local community, providing affection, assistance and encouragement to people with special needs, children and the elderly.
Sessions generally begin with self-paced bonding and interaction with the horses. Children are welcome to sit and observe or approach the horses when ready. The horses bring a sense of calmness and most children feel comfortable to participate.
The horses are patted, brushed and styled by the children. In particular, they enjoy adding clips or tying rubber bands in the horses' manes.
Children are also given the opportunity to sit on the horses and have their photograph taken.
Story time is held during the second half of each session. These are run by Robyn and Sarah from First Five Forever, an initiative focusing on literacy in the early years.
This involves singing, reading of books and associated interactive activities. The stories are read with such great expression that both children and adults are engaged throughout the entirety of the session.
Families attending for the first time receive the First Five Forever bounty bag. This includes a hardcover children's book, nursery rhyme booklet, hand puppet, wall poster and an array of resources to facilitate parent-child communication.
This program is quickly gaining popularity with local families. Places are limited and bookings are essential. Call 0421 659 052.
