2020 has brought home to a lot of people the importance of trying to limit the spread of disease. If you're looking for ways to explain concepts like germs and handwashing to young children, these three books might help.
1. Stop That Virus!

%%
Stop That Virus%%, by Words & Pictures Books, aims to teach children about viruses and our bodies' defences against them, using simple text and brightly coloured pictures. It's a board book with cut out sections, allowing the reader to see the virus peaking through different pages.

This cute little book introduces children to the very basics of immunology. It would be suitable for ages 3 and up (with an adult to read to them).

2. Staying Home: Guardians of Social Distancing by Joshua Burleson.

When a virus strikes in the magical land of Heartwood, a band of warrior deer work together to enforce social distancing and combat the virus.

This cute little story explains social distancing in a creative way which might make the ideas a bit more interesting for young animal lovers. It would suit readers aged 5-6, or younger children being read to by an adult.

3. Do Not Let Your Dragon Spread Germs

This cute picture book, written by Julie Gassman and illustrated by Andy Elkerman (the team behind Do Not Bring Your Dragon to the Library, and Do Not Take Your Dragon to Dinner), uses rhyming text to explain the importance of handwashing, face masks and staying home when you're sick. It also urges young readers not to worry too much about doing these things perfectly and just to try their best, which is all any of us can do.

This book is my favourite of the three, mainly because it has dragons in it. It's suitable for readers aged 6-8.
