What a wonderful surprise - this little gem was a great find, a book exchange and coffee shop combined.

The idea behind the store was to provide a place for the community to relax and read in a home environment.

This is such a great concept and wonderful for those on a budget.

This is how the book exchange works.

Buy one of the books, take it home, read it, return it and they re-purchase to book at half the value you originally paid.

It saves you heaps of money and you don't have a multitude of books collecting dust sitting on your shelves, never to be read again.

Volumes of books line the walls, covering just about every subject you would find in a bookstore. From fiction to nonfiction, gardening, health, children's, oh just go there and have a browse, I am sure you will find something to your liking. The prices are around half to a quarter of their original retail value, depending on their condition.

Bring in some of your unwanted books to perhaps sell, and treat yourself with the profits.

Another treasure is their range of rare and out of stock books, ask for that book you have been hunting down for years, it may be lurking on their shelves waiting for you.

A gorgeous children's section occupies a corner, where children can sit and read on their own little chair, or play with the toys while you read.

There are some great bargains in the trolley at the entrance to the store, browsing though I found some well known best sellers; they were a little well read, yet in pretty good condition. At $2 and $3 each, you can't go wrong.

Short on cash? Sort through their bargain basket, two books for $1! That's about 2 weeks of reading, cheaper than a newspaper and more fun.

Not sure if the book is for you? Then sit in the reading area and read a chapter or two to decide. This reading area is set up like a lounge room with old world plush velvet lounge chairs and scatter cushions, which gives a rather regal and homely feel, or sit at one of the chequered tables situated at the front section of the store with a hot chocolate.

If you are feeling a little 'peckish', order something light to eat
The menu ranges from scones with cream and jam, a nice cross section of yummy cakes, hot buttered banana breads, toasted sandwiches or hot soup to warm your winter soul. Adding to the old world charm, tea is served in delightful china cups and saucers; choose from their fragrant T2 range of tea. The famous Allpress Coffee beans are ground to fill your cup.

A great place when you want to escape the world. It feels like home, yet you don't have to worry about the unfinished chores. Anyone from retirees, school children, mums and bubs to a corporate person who needs a little time out frequents this little gem.

Next time you just want to relax and read, pop into The Book Station situated opposite Caringbah Railway Station on the Kingsway.
