About 3 years ago, my daughter (then aged 6) decided she wanted to be a writer. She wrote a gorgeous Christmas story, complete with pictures and together we put it into the format of a book.
On one sunny afternoon in November, I printed 50 copies of that book which she then sold to neighbours and friends for $2 a copy. Ever since making her first $100, she has been hooked to the notion of creating stories and the prospect of being a published author.
The countless requests to help with stories has gotten a bit much for me over the years, so I have been on the lookout for a writing course for kids. And 3 years into my search I have finally found one!
As part of their
school holiday program , Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is running a book-making day on Tuesday 2nd October, 2012 for children aged 6 years or older.
I love Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre's programs for children. In the past my kids have taken part in lots of activities there – all of very high quality. My kids have been to art workshops, talks about animals and gone to film festivals – but this is the first time I have come across their book-making day.
The day consists of two sessions. The first session, from 10am to 12pm, involves writing an imaginative tale, and the second session, 1pm to 3pm, involves assembling, illustrating and decorating the book.
Casula Powerhouse usually request that parents stay on site while their children participate in activities. While most of the workshops that I have been to have been shorter in length, I have never found passing the time to be a problem. There are usually art exhibitions to view and quiet space in the café to read a book or do some work on your laptop. The grounds themselves are really pleasant, providing a nice spot to have a picnic lunch with your child during the break.
Bookings are required for this workshop, which costs $30 / child. You can book online or over the phone. You will need to get in quick, as this workshop only caters for 20 children and I know for certain that one spot is already gone.
