Event:
Book launch to meet a talented local author and illustrator
There are some amazing children books on the market and it is difficult for parents to navigate the book aisles trying to source something that will be both entertaining and thought-provoking. Dr Sue Pillans, a Brisbane based marine scientist and visual artist, has provided just that book. As her alter ego 'Dr Suzie Starfish', she has written and illustrated her first children's picture book, The Great Barrier Thief.

Originally from Bundaberg, Sue has been passionate about the reef since she was an 11-year-old girl and has grown up with a special connection with the ocean.

"From the first time I stuck my head under the water I was delighted by the busyness of the reef, it was just like an 'underwater city', full of life, colour and noise, so much noise! Every time I visit the reef I feel like my 11-year old self again but the reef is changing before our eyes and something needs to be done, now".

Sue has written a story, using her own experiences, to illustrate the impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef and educate children about the impact of coral bleaching and what can be done to look after and protect the reef.

The story is told through the eyes of a feisty fish called Anthia who starts to see the disappearing colours of the reef as a warning sign that the reef is in trouble: "Did you know the coral colours are a warning sign? A global reef alarm? We all need to do what we can to keep it safe from harm".

As 2018 is the International Year of The Reef, this book would make a welcome addition in any child's stocking this Christmas. If you would like to order a copy of the book, details can be found at here.
