Award-winning local Perth writer Barbara Gurney will be at the Lyal Richardson Hall at the Gosnell's Knowledge Centre on Saturday the 27th of May 2017 from 2pm to 3pm to celebrate the launch of her latest novel The Promise.

Before she began writing her own work, Barbara spent over fifteen years writing and editing a newsletter for a local community group. In 2008 and 2009 she joined some local writers groups and was inspired by the other members to try and get some of her own work published.

In 2010, one of her short stories was shortlisted for the Charlotte Duncan Award and in 2011, her 267-word story, "Shadows of Remembered Dancing", was awarded Highly Recommended in Scribblegum's Gum Leaves Competition. In 2012, her story "Wide Brown Land" won first prize in the Minlaton Show Literary awards and that same year, her story "Purple" won first place at the Yarram Community Learning Centre Annual Literary Competition and "Honest People" was given an honourable mention at the Golden Wattle Writing Competition.

Barbara has written across a number of different genres. In 2015 she released two books of poetry, Life's Shadow and Footprints of a Stranger, and in 2016 she had her first fiction novel published, Road to Hanging Rock. The Promise is her second work of fiction.

The Promise tells the story of a lifelong friendship between four women: Eleanor, Pam, Jacqui and Rowena. Determined to stay friends forever, the teenagers make a promise over a set of teacups, which they call the Friendship Cups, to never lose touch with each other. Years later, Eleanor tells her great-niece Carrie about the cups and her three friends, compelling Carrie to track them down to see if they kept their youthful vow to each other. Armed with a matching milk jug and just a notebook, Carrie sets out to try and track down Pam, Jacqui and Rowena so she can ask them how important the Friendship Cups were to each of them. What follows is a heart-warming story of friendship, loyalty and romance.

The book launch will be a free event for adults only. Bookings are essential because places are limited so if you are interested in coming please contact the Gosnells Knowledge Centre on 9391 6000 to book your place.

The event will include light refreshments. People are encouraged to bring along their favourite tea cup so they can have a cup of tea. Barbara will be available to sign copies of the Promise at the book launch. The book will also be available for purchase.
