For two days only, all books (including old/collectables), DVDs and vinyl LPs are half price — Friday, March 18 from 9.00am to 7.00pm and Saturday, March 19 from 9.00am to 5.00pm. This is a real bonus considering their normal prices are already so cheap.
There are over 100,000 books on display at any one time in this massive bookshop, with several thousand books donated by the State Library of Western Australia each week. Added to this are thousands of DVDs and vinyl LP records (some many years old).
There is a diversity of good quality and unique books that a bookshop bound by commercial considerations would find hard to match. You never know what you may pick up, perfect for the eclectic reader. Yes, you will even find a thesaurus or two.
I cannot think of a better place to find so many quality books and multitude of titles (perhaps a few hidden unique treasures). You do not need to imagine what lies in the vaults of the State Library, just pop into Book Bazaar.
Though the sections and categories are clearly marked, hidden treasures abound. The search begins as you flip through the books in the hope of uncovering unavailable or out of print editions as well as current titles.
Plenty of time to browse but...
A word to the wise, do not hesitate. If you spot that treasure, grab it. This unique bookshop has no rain checks or sourcing an extra copy from the supplier.
What are old/collectable books?
This is a rare chance to pick up many valuable books and what may be otherwise unremarkable books, which are old, maybe, printed 50 to 100 years ago. Perhaps books you might not normally buy or find elsewhere. Have you ever wanted to take home unique books from a bookshop, but it was just too expensive? Well, know is your chance at half price.
Book Bazaar has thousands of vinyl long playing records (LPs), donated by the State Library of Western Australia. They are in excellent condition with many of the album covers still in their protective plastic.
The album covers were as popular as the music, works of art in themselves and something to read while listening to the music.
Benefit from The State Library's collection of unique and rare records accumulated over many years. Music from all genres means a chance find that elusive record of your youth or discover a rare track thought lost. Choose from an eclectic mix of musical styles ranging from classical to rock and everything in between.
Half price DVDs, no exceptions
Choose from thousands of DVDs of all kinds. Movies, music, documentaries, kids and TV shows. You name it and it is probably there. Everything in store is half price.
Friendly volunteers who assist the Book Bazaar Supervisor, Elke Schaumann, staff the sales. With such a large collection of books, I found that someone to point the way is an absolute necessity. If you have thought of becoming a volunteer, drop an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 9381 0193.
For your convenience
It is easy to lose track of time, so free parking and public toilets are a bonus. Do not rush off, you are encouraged to linger and browse awhile.
Banners point the way
Arriving at 10 Selby Street, Shenton Park, turn off into a little (privately owned, by Spine & Limb Foundation) road called Ellis Griffiths Avenue. The ParaQuad building is about 300m along Ellis Griffiths Avenue.
Large banners placed out on Selby Street for a week before the event ensure even the casual driver will not miss the turn off.
