Children have always loved Halloween. The combination of monsters, magic and the traditional practice of trick or treating have made it a firm favourite with youngsters for generations - especially over the last decade or two, since the advent of Harry Potter and the Twilight saga. However, with the big day just around the corner and an increasing awareness of potential 'stranger danger' in the community, many Perth parents are on the look-out for positive alternatives to trick or treating for their children.

Offering a safe but scary solution to this dilemma, on Saturday October 31st Perth Zoo will be holding a special Halloween event, , tailor-made to entertain youngsters of all ages. Beginning at 5.00pm and continuing until 8.00pm, will be a colourful and crazy celebration of Halloween – even enabling children to enjoy the fun of trick or treating at specially-designated stations throughout the zoo.

kicks off to an exciting start at 5.00pm with a fabulous assortment of cool Halloween-themed things to see and do. Popular animal exhibits such as the Australian Reptile Encounter, Nocturnal House and African Savannah will be open to visitors from 5.00pm until 6.30pm, while there will be plenty of fun to be had at the Variety Playground, as well as with story-telling, face-painting, airbrush tattoos and craft activities. There will also be game stations on the main lawn, Ghost Car tours and a Rainforest Retreat Torchlight Trek, during which you can challenge yourself to wander along an eerie path without getting scared. For very young children, the zoo's historic carousel will be in operation, offering a not-so-scary option for those who aren't quite ready for it.

Once the sun begins to set at around 6.30pm, the Halloween action will start to amp up – much to the delight of older kids and the brave-at-heart – with the Monster Mash disco on the main lawn. This will continue until 8.00pm, when the event will conclude. Children are encouraged to come along dressed up in their best scary outfit. With so many young witches, wizards, vampires, zombies and other spooky creatures in attendance this is sure to be a very thrilling experience for kids, and prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed.

In a nutshell, if your children are eagerly looking forward to Halloween, and you're seeking a special family-friendly event for them to participate in, then may be just what you're looking for. Taking place at Perth Zoo, promises to be an exciting night out, providing fun, imaginatively-conceived entertainment for children of all ages, just a short distance from down-town Perth.
