A festival of movies, food, drink, music & DJs, doggy dates, as well as date nights, await you at iconic Bondi Beach. The American Express Openair Cinemas is on now and continues until March 4.
I was lucky enough to attend on opening night with one of my besties. As we sat on the hill enjoying the great view of the beach, we met gorgeous dogs, chatted with their owners, ate yummy goodies, drank spritzers and wine, and to top it all off, we watched a fabulous movie.
The pre-movie music was excellent with a chilled-out set by an up and coming guitarist. There is different entertainment and artists depending on the night you book.
We had the option to buy lounges but we decided to sit on the hill - I especially wanted the full outdoor experience. Ticket prices do vary and the website does explain more, but if you really would like to spoil yourselves buy the Premium tickets. These include entry into the Star Lounge, reserved lounge seating, food served to you and a glass of wine. All this for only $40.
Honestly, you should try an outdoor cinema event at least once and this one on Bondi Beach is perfect if you have an American Express card. In fact, if you're a beach lover like me, then this is the outdoor cinema to book. Apart from hearing one motorbike roar past and a police siren drowning out the audio a little, the acoustics were great.
Even though it's summer, do take something warm to wear or hire the blankets available. Prepare a picnic basket if you wish, but don't place alcohol, glass or sharp utensils in it as they will be removed at the entrance. This is an over-18 event, so minors must be accompanied by an adult. It is smoke-free but your wristband allows unlimited passes in and out of the venue. There are more helpful hints about what to do and bring along here.
We chose to drive to Bondi and park for free, which was a 15 minute walk away but the best way to organise your trip is on the Transport NSW website if you don't feel like looking or paying for parking.
The movie we watched was The Greatest Showman. Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Michelle Williams lead an amazing cast of performers with a soundtrack full of angelic musical moments. This is a must-see movie for musical theatre lovers - it will have you smiling and humming tunes for days.
Keala Settle, who plays the bearded woman, belts out This Is Me, a huge anthem for anyone who feels different. This song is only one of a brilliant soundtrack written by Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
The American Express Openair Cinemas tours nationally with Bondi its fifth stop, then continues to Canberra, Adelaide and Perth. The festival also heads across the Tasman to dazzle audiences in Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand.
