Werewolves is a classic party game (similar to Mafia) and work on a pretty simple premise, within a group of people you must figure out who the werewolves are before they get you! Each night the werewolves pick a victim, and each day the villagers try to discover the werewolves.
The version hosted by Bondi Festival requires a host who runs the game and sets the atmosphere, and a number of players who may be villagers, special characters with extra abilities, or werewolves trying to be the last people standing.
In this version I will commend our host for setting the ambience, explaining the rules and making the game immersive with gruesomely gory descriptions of the village murders. It was definitely a fun time for kids and still engaging for the adult players. With dark red lighting, mood music and our ominous host to guide us through, I was definitely on the edge of my seat for most of the event.
My takeaway though is that this version is very much for those who love interactive theatre, who want to feel like they are in the atmosphere of the world and want to be part of the story, but also don't mind sitting back and watching the drama unfold. If you are the type of person who wants to solve a murder mystery this may not be the game for you, because if you are a villager it can be difficult to work off the limited information you have, or if you're the first to die the mystery is a little spoiled when you get to sneak a peek at all the characters (although our host will likely offer you bubbles for the adults, or lollipops for the kids).
If you are a big fan of the game Werewolves you may like some of the other variations including a particular favourite of mine One Night Ultimate Werewolf which you can play
online or
in person .
Werewolves is just one show out of many that's happening at the Bondi Pavillion as part of the Bondi Festival. You can check out a number of their other shows via their
website , which is full of comedies, theatre, arts, cabaret and more! There are also free mini-exhibits happening throughout the pavilion, including access to the art gallery, there is a large ferris wheel as well as an ice-skating rink outside!
Getting to the pavilion can be a little tricky, there is street parking around but this can be rather costly (we ended up paying $8 an hour for 2 hours), but there is free parking available on Queen Elizabeth Drive after 7 pm during the festival. I would recommend taking public transport, from Bondi train station you can catch the 333 or 380 which run quite frequently throughout the night to get to the pavilion.
The shows are all selling out fast so make sure to get tickets to your favourite events before it's too late!
