The Gladdy Drawing Club has teamed up with Bondi Festival to host a number of life-drawing sessions with live models. The routine includes a few quick poses, a couple of longer shots and a smattering of poses in different positions including standing, sitting and splayed out.
This is definitely a fun session where both beginners and expert artists can have a good time. All paper, pencils, erasers, drawing boards and sharpeners are provided by Gladdy Drawing Club, and there is a bar directly outside the room.
I will admit I am a total novice artist, and all of my drawings came out a little blobby and a little wonky (I'm sorry to the model who posed for me, I didn't quite get your likeness!) but I had a grand time, I went with a friend and we had a good laugh over our drawings and just had fun trying something new and something different.
Be aware that there will be nudity in the sessions (of the models, not yourself), so if that's not your vibe that's A-OK, but you have been warned! In the mix of models include burlesque model Demon Derriere and drag model Lady Fur, as well as nights where artists join the night and have a Q&A with the event hosts so you can learn a bit about their journey and their art style.
You are welcome to move around the room as you like to ensure you get the perfect angle you're going for. My friend and I noticed how you could tell our drawings were done from different perspectives which was pretty cool. Also please remember, if you do turn up, no photos of the models themselves, but you can check out their social media after the session!
The Gladdy Drawing Club hosts were super lovely and reminded all participants that at any time they could simply put up their hand to ask for any assistance, pointers or guidance. I did take a sneak peek over the shoulder of one of the hosts and they had drawn an amazing image (compared to my wonky blob) so I think they definitely have wisdom to spare in the art of well... art!
The Bondi Festival x Gladdy Drawing Club events will run throughout the festival with times all the way to the very last day of the festival (which will host two sessions)! Tickets are $26 each and you can purchase them via the Bondi Festival
website .
If you're interested in participating in the
Gladdy Drawing Club outside of the Bondi Festival they run every Tuesday night at The Lord Gladstone Hotel from 6pm - 8pm for $21. The models change each week and ticket holders get happy hour drinks from 4pm-6pm. You can even make private bookings via
[email protected]
Gladdy Drawing Club is just one show out of many that's happening at the Bondi Pavillion as part of the Bondi Festival. You can check out a number of their other shows via their
website , which is full of comedies, theatre, arts, cabaret and more! There are also free mini-exhibits happening throughout the pavilion, including access to the art gallery, there is a large ferris wheel as well as an ice-skating rink outside!
Getting to the pavillion can be a little tricky. There is street parking around but this can be rather costly (we ended up paying $8 an hour for 2 hours), but there is free parking available on Queen Elizabeth Drive after 7 pm during the festival. I would highly recommend taking public transport as there are many busses running, plus if you're coming from Bondi train station you can catch the 333 or 380 which run quite frequently throughout the night to get to the pavilion.
The shows are all selling out fast so make sure to get tickets to your favourite events before it's too late!
