Life on the edge
The Cliff Walk is a famous and very popular walk from Bondi to Coogee Beach. It takes you past breathtaking cliffs overlooking the most beautiful beaches and ocean in the world. It is a must for those visiting Sydney and for locals it is a fantastic way to get their daily exercise. You can choose to do the whole walk or a section of it depending on your level of fitness and the time that you have available to spend on this lovely winding track.
You could walk from Coogee, up past the cliffs and be on your way to Tamarama in no time. If you like, you could stop off at various interest points to admire the view or even for a swim. There are many places that you can take rest at and just stop to admire the natural surrounds. The beach air is refreshing and the negative ions created by the churning of the ocean are said to have health benefits (for those with allergies and asthma in particular). If you need any medication take it with you and bring along water and sun protection because there are some places that are isolated from shops. Most of the cliff walk is fairly easy going, unless you are up for jogging.
You can take your time and go at your own pace. The only detraction is that it is sometimes busy on weekends (especially on days that have nice weather) so you could feel a bit of pressure from those behind you to pick up the pace on the narrow parts of the walk. Some even jog through the graveyards – not to be recommended, as the noise it creates is significant on the metal walkway and can disturb those around you who want a peaceful family day out. Also take care on this part of the walk as the storms have damaged parts of the cliff. Apart from this, the walk is lovely and will allow you to see the most famously talked about beaches in Sydney.
It is a fantastic way to spend the day and is a popular walk for those trying to get fit or those who already are fit. It is great to do the walk with a friend and having some company will help you go further along. It is the sort of walk that can be challenging and includes hills and stairs and uneven surfaces. It is fantastic if you want to get fit but it is not too challenging for those who are elderly or unfit. You can take your time and if it gets too much, take a rest break at the many sun-soaked beaches on the way. Spend as much or as little time on the walk as you like, you are in total control.
