Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra (MMO) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018 and to mark this milestone, the orchestra is currently preparing for a three-week European tour, culminating in a performance at the BDZ Eurofestival in Bruschal, Germany. But before they embark on this exciting adventure, MMO is treating their homegrown fans to a very special concert event! The 'Journeys Concert' will be held at St George's Centre on Sunday 15th April, from 2.30pm. During the afternoon, music lovers will be whisked away on an exquisite musical expedition, featuring classic favourites from home and abroad and new works by Elena Kats-Chernin and Shaun Rigney.Elena Kats-Chernin was commissioned to compose for the MMO by two members of the orchestra in 2017, one of whom is also a sculptor. Elena was inspired by the figure carved in wood by Lorraine LePlastrier of a feisty determined woman sailing into the wind in a small boat. The result was "She Who Sails into the Wind", and the MMO is proud to present the Melbourne premiere of this evocative piece at the Journeys Concert.Another premiere reflecting the ocean is Shaun Rigney's "Pacific Rim Variations", the winning entry in the MMO's Composition Competition in honour of its 50th anniversary, displaying the rhythms of the Pacific in its many forms.Other works include the Suite No. 2 by Konrad Wölki, arguably the original prolific composer of music for the plucked string orchestra. Living in Germany after WWI, he brought the mandolin out of the drawing room onto the concert stage, where the general public appreciated it. A favourite of players and audiences alike, Suite #2 is one of the most beautiful pieces in the repertoire, varying from wildly exciting to gently contemplative.Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy a delightful afternoon of music and say 'Bon Voyage' to the MMO! Tickets are now on sale through Trybooking or phone 0438 023 944. Tickets are priced $25 (children under 12 are free) and will also be available at the door. For more information on this event, head to the MMO Facebook page.
