Were you one of those children who filled your dress up box with feather boas, costume jewellery, and your mother's old high heels? Um... me neither. But if you were, here's a chance for you to relive your favourite childhood pastime.
The Bombshell Burlesque and Beauty Academy believes that there's a sensual goddess lurking inside every woman (or man). Former circus, theatre and dance star La Viola Vixen is the headmistress of a school where the three R's refer to rhythm, raunch and red lipstick. Instead of spelling and arithmetic, this academy offers classes in subjects like vintage beauty, bump and grind, hula hooping and, my personal favourite, go-go dancing. I swear I would have been a go-go dancer, if only I was born a few decades earlier.
Like roller derby, one of the best things about the colourful world of burlesque are the nom de plums. Ms Vixen leads a team of delightfully named instructors: Haylee Comet the makeup tutor, Tigerlil the hula-hoop teacher, and Bella de Jac, Amelie Lulu, Miss Alyssa Kitt and Lila Luxx leading the class in burlesque techniques.
The Bombshell academy opened in 2010 at the Old Museum in Brisbane and has since expanded to locations in Byron Bay, Redcliffe and the Gold Coast. See the website for more information.
