Former Jakarta-based journalist currently living in Australia's surfing capital of Torquay. Freelance writer, translator and Indonesian tutor. Love food, not surfing. I write for WN as a way to get to know my new home (town).
If you love coffee and beach, the Bomboras Kiosk is your must go to place. It is basically the only cafe on the beach in Torquay so it guarantees you get your coffee and good view of the water. More importantly, the coffee is good and staff are friendly. For many mothers including me, the cafe is also appealing as it has a play area in the corner - although not massive- to entertain the little people.
Bomboras Kiosk is one of the cafe ventures under Bomboras Group, owned by local surfers Tom and Josh, its website read. Opened in the end of 2011 after what they call "a year long surfing sabbatical", this establishment aims at serving good coffee (made of fair trade organic coffee) with to those who love good view of the busy Fisherman's Beach in town.
When my family first moved to this seaside town 2 years ago, Kiosk was our go to for 'beach and coffee' walk. My husband and I also enjoy having light lunch there followed by a little beach stroll or wandering into the bush at Taylor Park across the street.
Sitting in its alfresco area, little one usually devours its sausage rolls (which I approve as it contains grated carrot that is excellent for his veggie fix!) and tastes delicious too. Personally, I like its Ice Coffee especially after a long walk with my girlfriends. You know when people say we should appreciate little things in life? I get it, but I also appreciate Kiosk's huge portion of Ice Coffee with a generous dollop of vanilla ice cream. It is sinfully delicious and perfect treat for a summer morning.
Sit down in the alfresco area or grab your coffee and go, this space is yours to enjoy
Despite its prime location and delicious treats though, Kiosk doesn't rip you off. The price of its food is so reasonable (sausage roll for $4 and ham tomato toastie is only $6, which is more bakery rather than cafe price). I am wondering if it's actually their trick so that we keep coming back. Hmmm....I have no doubt!!
All you are done with simple toasted sandwich and looking for more satisfying lunch, Kiosks offers a variety of delish gourmet foccacias, homemade quiche, lasagne and many more. A friend had a flathead fish that came with generous chips the other day and she struggled to finish it.
Now, would you join me for a cuppa before we are back pushing the prams further and get these little people some action in the playground few meters away?
