Stay in style for less at Bohemia
This place was such a gem of a find. I have travelled quite a bit around Australia recently and due to money restrictions I have been visiting everywhere on a budget, and as accommodation is one of the highest costs I have been staying in backpacker places. I have been staying in private en-suite rooms on my travels - I am broke, but I am also 34 and my days of sharing dorms are very much behind me.

So far I have stayed in the "will do" (Perth) the "awful" (Darwin - in fact it was so bad I did a runner to the Holiday Inn for a night) and then most recently the Bohemia Resort, which after the other pretty rubbish places and low expectations was just wonderful, and at just $171 for three nights was by far the cheapest and my favourite so far.

The first thing that struck me on arrival was how welcoming and friendly the staff were. They were really helpful and more than happy to answer question after question about where to go, what to see and how to get there. They also have lots of offers and tours that they will guide you on and book for you.

When I saw the room and was really surprised at the quality and the facilities that it had. In Darwin and Perth simply having a bed and a bathroom was the extent of the "facilities" so I was pleased to find my suite really comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated.

You can get family rooms, single suites, double, twin or group rooms. Each room has its own private bathroom, work desk, patio, aircon, safe, sink, fridge, tea & coffee making, hairdryer, iron and a television. Plus each room is guaranteed either pool or great garden views and has ceramic tiled floors, modern décor and natural lighting.

The bed was very comfortable and felt clean and fresh - which believe me in some places I have stayed you do not get that feeling at all.

The on site facilities are excellent too. It has a large pool and spa, an Internet cafe, guest lounge, communal kitchen, pool side dining area and more. The even offer free basic breakfast to all guests - just tea, coffee and cereal and toast but it's free so when you are on a budget it makes a huge difference.

Location wise it is really convenient - It is approximately 1.5km drive North of the Cairns CBD and around 1.5km drive South of the Cairns Domestic and International Airport.

Based in North Cairns you are about a 10-minute journey to the CBD by bus. Just one block away you get to Sheridan Street, which has numerous buses going to and from the City every 10 minutes, so you are well connected in either direction you wish to go in. There are also a number of local shops just a few minutes walk away so you can stock up on basics, and make use of the facilities in the resort to keep the costs down.

I loved Cairns, I think it has been one of my favourite places to visit so far and I certainly want to go back as soon as possible. I totally believe staying somewhere that is really welcoming and comfortable makes such a difference. Being on my own I felt safe and relaxed and it certainly did not feel like a "backpackers".

It is good to know, and other backpacker places should take note, that cheaper doesn't have to mean poor quality and below standard. The Bohemia Resort Cairns is a wonderful place and I absolutely wouldn't book anywhere else to stay.
