A newcomer to the Melbourne cabaret scene, invites you to "leave your inhibitions at the door" and experience the "21st century that should have been". Redefining a whole century seems like a lot to expect from a small cabaret club, one of many in Melbourne, located on a quiet residential street in South Melbourne. Yet Bohemia does not fall short on bold statements.

Despite its location off the main street, it is easy to locate Bohemia: just follow the music, the lights and the sounds of people laughing, glasses clinging and Mama singing. Once you reach there, don't be shy and with that single move of your hand open the door to an entirely different world, time and location.

Upon entering you will feel like you'd just stepped back in time to the golden age of art, literature, music and dance; to 1920s, the decade of elegance, indulgence and decadence. There is definitely an art nouveau feeling to Bohemia and the décor adds to that classy, almost exclusive touch. However Bohemia offers much more; the atmosphere is welcoming and inviting. You don't feel out of place, even if this is your first cabaret experience, you feel included.

The diversity of the audience certainly plays a role in this. On any given night, you will see people from all ages, couples who are on their first dates or 50th wedding anniversaries, groups celebrating birthdays, double dates, girls' night outs, bachelor parties and so on. Whatever your situation is, you will not feel alone. Everybody is here for the same reason: a change, an escape from their mundane lives.

Try to get a good seat, because you will not want to miss the show. If you are going on a busy night, like a Friday or a Saturday, you may not have many options. For those who wish to enjoy a more intimate show, I would suggest going there on a Wednesday or a Thursday; you will get better seats and better views.

Bohemia has live entertainment from Wednesday to Sunday with a different theme each day. For the Cabaret-virgins out there, the Kabaret Kunst on Wednesdays is your best choice to experience a variety of cabaret styles. The main show starts around 9pm, but from 6pm there are smaller performances (10-15 minutes long) every half an hour.

So, what to do while you are waiting for the next show? The answer lies in the menu in front of you. Even if you go there for the show, you will stay for the food. However do not expect generous portions; Bohemia serves strictly "entrée-sized" plates for, unfortunately, main course prices. Don't be deterred though, you will be surprised at the complexity of the dishes and how many flavours can be contained in those small servings. It is still a good idea to eat beforehand just to the point that you are comfortable but not full and treat yourself with some delicious food and desserts from Bohemia.

Reservations are a must and don't forget to "leave your inhibitions at the door".
