The Zebra Crossing - where Africa meets Australia - never ceases to astound me with their very innovative occasions to inspire Australians to taste-test and fall in love with delicacies, inspired by South African people and South African traditions.
Once again The Zebra Crossing are hosting one of their extremely popular boerewors (South African sausage) tastings and everybody is invited to this very social, very festive get together.
There are many people worldwide who do not have South African connections and therefore wouldn't know about this tasty South African sausage. The name 'boerewors' comes from the Afrikaans word Boer ('farmer') and wors ('sausage'). It is thought that the recipe for boerewors would have originated with the early migrants landing on South African soil - possibly with the Dutch coming from the Netherlands.
The unique taste of boerewors comes from the generous amount of spices used, particularly Coriander, Nutmeg, Cloves, All Spice and Black Pepper. But … in saying this, most South Africans would have a a traditional recipe, usually passed down through the generations, the contents of which, can be a very tightly-held secret. In other words, not every tasty morsel of boerewors is necessarily the same, with a little bit of this or a little bit of that, added.
Beautiful hand-beaded lambs, very typical of Africa
That is why the Boerewors Tasting and Get Together at The Zebra Crossing on the 9 Septemberis an excellent way to personally taste-test and decide for yourself, from the diverse variety of boerewors flavours that will be on offer:
