I've never liked the conventional ways of exercising; going to the gym and pushing iron or running on treadmills have always bored me and caused me to quickly give up and push away the notion of getting fit to the back of my mind once more (let's have a moment of silence to all my past failed New Year's resolutions to hit the gym more). I've finally found my salvation to the monotony of the gym and it's in 7-inch heels at Bobbi's Pole Studio Malaysia . Located above Toni & Guy in Bangsar lies a world where sexiness and strength go hand-in-hand.

Bobbi's Pole Studio Malaysia offers pole dancing classes for predominantly women (and the occasional gay male), with different levels from Beginners (to those who've never tried pole before) and all the way to Advanced, which are the same levels as some of the instructors there. The chief of the studio is Maple Asaro Loo , a prominent figure in the Malaysian dance scene who is simply a vision on the dance floor when she poles. The studio also offers Slap, which is a fun lap-dance styled class that goes from Beginner level to Intermediate. There are also classes which focus on strength and flexibility, both which are key components in a pole dancer.

The classes are done in semesters, which consists of 1-hour classes that go for 8 weeks (so one semester per every 2 months). During each class, students will learn a variety of pole tricks according to their level, and a routine. The routine will be a combination of the tricks you've learned plus some fun and sexy choreography. At the end of each semester, the studio will have a Show Night where the students of each levels are encouraged to perform their routines.

Often the studio offers a Mini-Pole or Mini-Slap class, which is only 4 classes in a month for students who aren't quite sure whether the pole life is for them or not, but would like to try it out. There are also slots for practice sessions, which are free before 7pm and during the weekends for students to hone their skills and practice those tricks. There are also private classes available (one-on-one or a small group) for the serious pole dancers. The studio also caters to Hen's Nights , which run for about 1 and a half hours and is sure to be a ton of fun involving sequined costumes, killer heels and a sexy dance routine.

The classes here are on the expensive side, with a semester costing at RM585, which works out to be about RM73 per class give or take. To drop in for a casual class is about RM85 , and to arrange a private class with an instructor is around RM160.

So, what do the students actually wear when going to class? When I first started, I wore tank tops and shorts. You can always tell who the beginners are by their more modest code of dress. Once I was hooked and began to move up the levels, I moved on to sports bras, booty shorts and bikinis due to the need to use your skin for some of the more intermediate tricks. And yes, 7-inch and above pole dancing heels are what everybody will wear (outside shoes are NOT allowed to be worn in the studio) but if you're a beginner, it's fine to go barefoot.

Expect to gain a toned body and abs along with a newfound sense of self-confidence. I've found pole dancing to be an amazing form of self-esteem as students are encouraged to look and feel sexy, which cultivates a body-positive environment. The pole dance community is great and full of friendly, non-judgmental individuals.
