I am a world traveller & a mom of two, (8 & 6). I love to meet people, and am fascinated that there are 7 billion stories out there to be explored. I think Melbourne is the most happening city to live in with all the fun activities around town.

Enjoy a cruise while in Melbourne
Cruising in the bay or the river sounds like an ideal activity, especially on an ideal sunny day. The gentle swaying of the water is soothing and relaxing. Who wouldn't mind such heavenly relaxation. But wait, must you own a boat... or are there other options that can be considered?
Purchasing a boat may not be the possibility for everyone. Why? The cost of buying a boat, maintaining it, storing it, towing it, etc. can all be prohibitive. Going on a river cruise is an option but I have often found that the cruises are tourist-oriented, not relaxation-oriented, yet enjoyable nonetheless if that is what you want to do. There are several other options to enjoy the plentiful water around Melbourne and surrounds that can be explored.
There are some companies that provide membership for an annual fee, which gives access to members to a fleet of boats that can then be hired through making reservations. One such company is Pleasure Cruising (based in Docklands), and their fleet consists of luxury boats. This is as close to owning a boat that you can get, with the advantage of cruising on different kinds of boats each time.

Other boats can also be hired on hourly or half a day basis. The boats may be smaller and can be used for cruising or fishing. Rates are reasonable. One such company is Boat 4 Hire (also based in Docklands), that offers excellent and competitive hourly, half and full day rates (prices vary for weekday and weekends).

Mornington Peninsula has several boats for hire companies for people mainly interested in fishing. One of the bigger ones is Mornington Boat Hire located at Schnapper's point. Kayaks, pedal boats and fishing gear can also be conveniently hired from the same location.
River Cruises from Melbourne
Last but not least, cruising on the Yarra River in one of the tourist boats is also a great option on a fine sunny day. River Cruises is one of the many companies that offers tourist cruises, along with others to Williamstown and around Port Melbourne. Around South Bank and Docklands, you may also find dinner cruise boats, if that is what you fancy. Of course, the great Sorrento-Queenscliffe ferry ride is a must-do for all tourists and residents alike.

Doing a bit of research on the internet will provide you with many viable options, therefore a bit of research will go a long way, if cruising the waterways is what you are thinking about. What is your favourite way of enjoying the waterways around Melbourne? Leave a note.
