Free music festival on the Gold Coast
One of my favourite festivals is Blues on Broadbeach. Held annually in May, and absolutely free, the line-up and schedule for 2013 has been released and it's looking like a hell of a good time.

Starting in 2002, Broadbeach Alliance kicked off Blues on Broadbeach and it's been going from strength to strength ever since. The festival is four day long weekend of blues and related genres, with many artists playing more than one set over the long weekend.

Tim Griffin has three sets at Blues on Broadbeach

The festival kicks off on Thursday 23 May, with local (Brisbane) acts Devil's Kiosk, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate, Asa Broomhall and the winner of 2011 Memphis Blues Challenge, The Mojo Webb Band. You can also catch the winner of 2012 Memphis Blues Challenge, Tim Griffin (pictured above), playing as part of Gail Page Blues Extravaganza, featuring Sisters of Blues, Britt Jones, Kelly Auty and Liz Payet, Lil' Fi, Rebecca Davey, Alison Penney, and Iseula Hingano. And the party's only just started.

Dreamboogie have two sets over the festival

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you're gunna be spoiled for choice. Must-see acts on Friday include The Lachy Doley Band, Dreamboogie (pictured above), Claude Hay, Jimi Beavis and Dave McGuire (pictured below), Ali Penney and Dave Blanken, and Melbourne band Jimi Hocking's Blues Machine.

My picks for Saturday include Lil' Fi & The Dirty Rascals, Nat Col & The Kings, and Andrew Baxter Band. On the more relaxed Sunday, make time for Blues Super Group, featuring The Phil Emmanuel Band, Jon Stevens, Joe Camilleri, Russell Morris, Kevin Borich, Joshua Needs, Gail Paige, Kelly Auty and Britt Jones.

Jimi Beavis and Dave McGuire play four times over the long weekend

There's some big-name acts each day too - Friday sees Jon Stevens take the stage, Ian Moss on Saturday and Sunday you can see Vanessa Amorosi.

Many acts have a couple of sets over the weekend, so take some time to check through the schedule and mark out your must-sees, making sure to give yourself some time to find some gems you've not heard of before. And one important housekeeping rule - the festival is an unlicensed event, but alcohol can be purchased and consumed in the (many) licenced venues hosting live music over the long weekend.

There's plenty of accommodation available, with a link on the Blues on Broadbeach website. You can find out more about Blues on Broadbeach on their website here, and like them on Facebook here.
