It's hard to conceive of the brain storming session that led to the creation of Blue Man Group. I envision a few mates talking over their second or third pint when one of them pipes up with, "I have a great idea! Let's shave our heads, paint ourselves blue and play some crazy percussion! We can invite people to watch and the best part is we'll never say a word to our audience!" I doubt I would have replied, "That's a million dollar idea! We're going to Vegas, Baby!"

But a multi-million dollar idea it was. The co-founders of The Blue Man Group began performing around New York in 1987. Since that time, the group has toured the globe visiting Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada. Additionally, the Blue Man Group has been a constant fixture on the Las Vegas strip since 2000. In twenty-five years, their worldwide audience has grown to over 25 million people. Amazingly, this is their first trip to Australia.

Chris Wink, one of the show's creators, is particularly excited about bringing the new updated show to Australia. He believes that the values of the blue men and those of Australia are quite similar. Both, according to Wink, value the "refined as well as the rugged, the ancient as well as the modern and the powerful as well as the delicate". It is his hope that when Australia is introduced to the men they will "look past the blue and see some of themselves in the Blue Man Group".

Trying to describe the Blue Man experience nearly defies language. Percussion instruments of all types, some created by the Blue Men themselves, are used throughout the show. They re-purpose found objects, playing on plumbing pipes and luminescent balls. More drums than ever before have been promised for the Australian shows. Juxtaposed against these ancient tribal beats are representations of technology that influence us in both positive and negative ways. The Blue Men pass no judgements on how we live. They do, however, nudge us to examine this for ourselves.

That's where we begin to understand the phenomenon of the blue men. It's not the outward spectacle, as dazzling as it is, that has created a legion of devotees. Instead, the transformative power of the Blue Man Group experience is in its ability to create a community out of hundreds of people who were strangers just an hour before. It is the best party you've ever been invited to. Look around the room; everyone is smiling both at the Blue Men and each other. It rivets you to the performance and then invites you to join in. When the show is over, the audience leaves with the afterglow of having been a part of something remarkably special.

The Blue Man Group provides a mesmerising evening of entertainment that's fun for all ages. Performances begin on August 10th at the Lyric Theatre in Pyrmont and continue through September. Tickets can be purchased though Ticketmaster .
