It was thanks to a small book that we stumbled across this little gem of a restaurant. If you have never heard of the "Entertainment Book" please do yourself a favour and look it up . It offers hundreds of discounts and bargains to various restaurants, takeaways, cafes, sporting events, art shows and attractions in the Greater Melbourne region. It costs around $65 and is valid for the entire year. This book is a perfect companion in these tight times.

Blossom Thai is located on Toorak Road, close to the Chapel Street intersection. I know what you are thinking and no, I have not gone bonkers. It really is there. Blossom Thai is barely noticeable and sits squashed between its two neighbours. The tiny front masks what is actually a large restaurant and one of the best meals that my wife and I have had in Melbourne.

We both finished work this last Friday and armed with our "buy one, get one free" ticket we made our way to the restaurant. We had not made a reservation but thought that we would take a chance anyway. We arrived at about 6pm and the place was deserted. This immediately caused concern as we are one of those couples that view an empty restaurant as a negative sign. Rather than sit in an empty restaurant, I decided that we should head across the road for a sundowner and give the place time to fill up. My wife mentioned that we should probably book, to be safe, but, in my infinite wisdom, I assured her that this was not necessary. This decision almost turned out to be a catastrophic one.

Somewhere between my Margarita and 7pm, someone opened the floodgates and snuck a small army of hungry patrons into Blossom Thai.

With my wife glaring at me, I sheepishly opened the door to the now crowded restaurant and was greeted by the manager. He could clearly sense my impending doom and in order to keep me off the couch that night managed to organise a table for us in the back.

With balance in the universe restored we got down to the serious business of exploring the menu. I ordered Pad See Yew which was Thai style stir fried flat rice noodles with seasonal vegetables, egg and their special sweet soy sauce. My wife ordered Pad Takai which is stir fried chicken with chopped lemon grass, chilli and seasonal vegetables served on a sizzle plate.

These two dishes were simply delicious and the portions were huge. The manager then came around and offered us dessert. We weren't sure if we were interested as this is usually where most restaurants drop the ball. The manager strongly recommended the Sticky Date Pudding with Ice Cream and confidently stated that if we did not enjoy it then he would not charge us.

Blossom Thai has it all. Great food, a good selection of wine, decent pricing, generous portions and a friendly vibe and atmosphere lead by the manager. Do yourself a favour and dig up this little gem.
