The Australian-Irish Heritage Association is hosting the 26th annual Bloomsday Literary & Musical Evening on Tuesday 16th of June, 2015.
Held at the Irish Club Theatre, this special celebration will feature an exciting line-up of broadcasting celebrities, including Peter Holland and Diana Warnock, comedienne Damien O'Doherty, actors Marian Byrne, Ric Hearder, Kathy Jennings, Liam McDonald and Mr Joyce himself!
Commencing at 8pm, the Bloomsday Literary & Musical Evening pays tribute to James Joyce's controversial 3rd novel Ulysses, originally published in 1922. The novel follows a day in the life of Leopold Bloom (the Bloom of Bloomsday), a Jewish advertising canvasser, and young academic Stephen Dedalus, Joyce's alter ego, on Thursday, June 16th 1904. Their characters shadow Odysseus and Telemachus and the characters and incidents of Homer's Odyssey from 8th century BC.
Ulysses went on to be acclaimed the greatest English language novel of the twentieth century. It was groundbreaking and experimental in breaking away from storytelling, conventional structure, grammar and coherence.
It is a novel best read aloud which explains the popularity of the Bloomsday Literary event, as one can enjoy the expression of the stream-of-consciousness prose, the parodies, puns and allusions voiced by Dublin characters.
At the upcoming Perth event, the additional explanations and themed extracts will be presented by editors Sean Byrne and Colm O'Doherty. The parlour atmosphere will also be evoked through charming melodies and songs performed by Louise Hodge on piano, Pavla Walsh on flute, with Tenor Justin Friend and Soprano Katherine Friend.
Tickets for this event are priced $20 per person (no concessions available) and includes Irish tea interval and a programme. To make a booking, please contact 0417 249 245. Audience members are encouraged to dress Edwardian style.
