Can you think of an activity that involves fitness, relaxation or team sports? Chances are you will find it at the in Eden Hills.

Known locally as Blackwood Rec – or simply The Rec – the large indoor facility has a variety of classes and social activities to suit any age-group.

There are a number of specialist classes available, for example fitness regimes designed for diabetes sufferers or those with a high blood-sugar level.

"Fun gym" parties can be catered for children as young as two. Older children can host a roller-skating party and there is a private room available for these events.

Basketball, netball, gymnastics, trampolining, badminton, boxercise, martial arts, volleyball, indoor soccer – the list goes on. You can nominate a team to join a competition or develop a plan with a fitness instructor to do your own thing in the fully equipped gymnasium.

If in-line hockey takes your fancy, The Rec is home to the Blackwood Blaze, who compete locally and interstate.

For those wanting a quieter form of fitness, there are yoga and Pilates classes, and over-fifties can participate in a supervised strength training program.

There is a supervised play room for pre-schoolers so, if you have children, you can enjoy the facilities without worrying what the little ones are up to. The cost is $3 for the first child and $2 for each additional.

If the number of cars outside is an indication of popularity, The Rec is very popular indeed. However, timing is everything and if you arrive just as a class is finishing you can slip into a newly-vacated parking space without too much trouble.

The centre can be tricky to find the first time. You turn a sharp left, just after turning into Northcote Road and follow this into the car park area.

There is a choice of package combinations but, as a guide, classes are $12 for casual visits, a ten-visit pass is $100 and membership for twelve months unlimited access to gym equipment and classes is $390.
