The Blacktown Showground Precinct is located only 5 minutes walk from the Blacktown train station. Considering this, it is a surprisingly lush and beautiful space.
The showground itself is commonly used for large festivals and shows but the remainder of the precinct has been transformed into a beautiful park and recreational area interspersed with native plantings.
This wetland receives storm water from Blacktown, and filters and removes pollutants using natural processes that occur within a wetland system. It is also home to ducks and numerous water birds and the banks provide a home to other small animals. As such, the wetland has a threefold benefit; it helps to clean up the local water, provides habitat for wildlife and also provides a picturesque water feature for the precinct.
Informative plaques are scattered beside the boardwalks giving visitors even more insight into the importance of this habitat.
You can wander beside the tall reeds where you will discover a memorial dedicated to people that have lost their lives in the workplace, and to their families. Take a moment to pause for reflection as you look out over the space.
At the perimeter and dotted throughout is woodland that provides a place for native plants. One of the species of note is the Prickly Spider Flower which you can spot around the precinct and which is endemic to certain parts of Western Sydney - yet found nowhere else in the world.
Another attractive feature of the precinct is the Blacktown community garden. While it is not open for access to the general public, it is still on full view to visitors and it really is a wonderful testament to how well a community garden can thrive. I remember it from years ago and the variety of plants grown in the garden has increased so much since it began.
Francis Green is a large open green space perfect for a variety of casual activities and is also located within the precinct. People often use the space to kick around a ball, play catch or just relax on the provided benches along the perimeter.
The Blacktown Showground Precinct is a fantastic natural space that provides something for everyone and it's convenient location only increases its accessibility and appeal. The space is particularly busy on weekends but is also a popular space for an early evening stroll any day of the week.
If you decide to drive there are 2 free car parks located within the precinct.
