Get up close and personal with nature & wildlife
Sitting on 182 hectares of land and located approximately six kilometres from Newcastle CBD, Blackbutt Reserve is a world filled with nature, wildlife and recreational activities.

A very cute and cuddly resident at the Blackbutt Reserve...

This family-friendly free Reserve makes the perfect family day out. There is plenty to do, see and experience with wildlife and critter encounters, animal exhibits, bushwalks and walking trails, five main picnic areas and playground.

One of the many picturesque views at the Reserve

Blackbutt Reserve is an undulating natural environment which is home to native wildlife including koalas, kangaroos, emus, wallabies, wombat exhibits as well as many bird close viewing multi-award winning exhibits. There are interpretative signage located along the boardwalks to the animal exhibits.

Birdwatching is one of the many activities that can be enjoyed at the Reserve

There are many nature trails as well as a diverse range of habitats and ecosystems. Some of the nature trails feature boardwalks, which are wheelchair and pram/stroller accessible.

The Reserve features nine different interesting, as well as challenging, walking trails. They are all signposted and each walk showcases varying forests and scenery.

A mix of gum trees, rainforest and vines make up this unique reserve...

There are Koala talks held 2pm daily and reptile show (tickets can be purchased at the kiosk) held on weekends at 11am. You can also pat and take photos with koalas for a small fee.

This pretty peacock found a comfy resting spot

You can enjoy tranquil picnic settings which feature electric and wood fire barbecues. There are five main picnic areas including the Black Duck Picnic Area, which is the most popular with families. The Bower Bird playground is perfect for the little ones as it features a climbing structure, roundabout, see-saw, group swing, slides and musical instruments.

Other activities can be enjoyed here too such as feeding the emus, interactive colour-in activity for the little ones to complete while taking a walk on the boardwalk, there are also event 1 hour guided tours of the wildlife exhibits.
