A 'star attraction' on the
D'Aguilar Highway , the town of Blackbutt is popular for good food, agriculture, day trips and the birthplace of Roy Emerson AC. A
museum named after the immortal tennis star from the sixties is just off the main street behind
Les Muller Park . I was there recently paying two dollars for entry to this museum. A tiny building that was a former school, it's filled with news articles, old slates from the school when it was taught by its principal and tennis racquets. Roy Emerson attended this school and grew up on a dairy farm nearby.
There's a noticeably good
bakery in Blackbutt by the name of the town - it had quite a spectacular range of sweet slices and pies doing a strong trade when I ate and drank there, despite a calm day for the town's often roaring visitor trade. The curators at the Roy Emerson Museum mentioned to me in a lengthy conversation that the town can get very busy but busyness is unpredictable to a certain extent. With the D'Aguilar Range and
national park being a popular scenic drive - its attraction is the subtropical rainforest being
close to Brisbane yet having adequate space to escape big city stresses. Blackbutt is not necessarily a gourmet food centre but what I did see in terms of food was good including the nice country cafe beside the pub called the
Bunya Nut Cafe .
For accommodation it's mainly the
town's pub and bed and breakfast - the town facilities seem more geared toward day-tripping than overnight stays as it is such a small town, but with such a remarkable history. Near Roy Emerson Museum are some rail artifacts related to logging transportation a hundred years ago and part of the
Brisbane Valley Rail Trail - on that note, Blackbutt is named after a species of eucalyptus tree known as
the blackbutt . It's a recommendable driver reviver location but can also be accessed by
Purser's Coaches - a service that connects the South Burnett region with Caboolture Railway Station - the Blackbutt coach/bus stop is outside its town pub and Les Muller Park - the town's main park named after a significant local community person.
For tennis history aficionados, it's got the ultimate quirky museum - as far as quirkiness goes. A pleasant surprise, a healthy combination and an intriguing experience in the
D'Aguilar Range , Blackbutt is a novelty and being so close to Brisbane and the hearts of Aussie sport fans remains a day trip that must be crossed off the bucket list. At four hours of driving for the entire day trip from Brisbane - it's simply a must-do trip up the small mountains and hills of the D'Aguilar Range.
