Being a fan of both the theatre and Blackadder, when my friends invited me along to The Old Mill to see Blackadder Goes Forth by Serial Productions, I couldn't say no.

Blackadder Goes Forth was the final series of the BBC sitcom, written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. It placed Blackadder, Baldrick and George in a Flanders trench during World War I and followed their various doomed attempts to escape death. Despite initial concerns the series might trivialise the events of 1914-1918, Blackadder Goes Forth received widespread acclaim and won the 1989 British Academy Television Award for best comedy series.

Going on opening night, it was expected that there might be a few hiccups, and this production was no exception. Many of the scene changes in the first act went for longer then necessary and there were too many of them. The set was very cleverly constructed on a lazy susan, however the gears are in urgent need of grease as the noise it made turning was a distraction.

The second act, while shorter then the first, was set out better. There were less scene chances, but there were a couple of scenes so short, they almost didn't seam necessary. The ending was done very well, along the lines of the TV series.

Directed by David Gregory, this stage adaptation features Joe Isaia as Captain Blackadder, Keith Scrivens as Baldrick, Rodney van Groningen as Lieutenant George, Tim Edwards as Captain Darling and Peter Clark as General Melchett. All of the cast did very well with their English accents and emulations of the classic cast.

If you are into Blackadder at all, I would recommend going along to see this, despite the errors we had. Blackadder Goes Forth is on until the 19th of October.
