If you've only ever headed into Toodyay for a day trip, you should take a look at the Black Wattle Retreat. The luxurious accommodation offered at this bed and breakfast will entice you to consider a stay at this well appointed bush hideaway.
Located 18km north west of Toodyay this well bed and breakfast will surprise you in both its location and ambience. This isolated home is set atop a hill just off the Bindoon - Dewars Pool Road and sits on over 80 acres of bushland. You are greeted at the entrance by the 'security team' and various bits of quirky art which line the track leading up to the homestead.
The Black Wattle is an amazing place and struck us as something not usually seen in a bush setting. Guests have a real choice of accommodation here. All three suites inside the house are large and luxurious and are all very well appointed. All have ensuites which has everything you desire, including soft and comfortable bathrobes, and all the rooms are equipped with king size beds, LCD TVs and DVD players.
The Courtyard suite has its own spa within it so its guests can have the ultimate in privacy. The guests in the other 2 suites, The French Provincial and Grand Master, have use of an outdoor spa which is sheltered, private and well lit - so a night time spa looking at the stars with a relaxing glass of wine or two makes the perfect end to your day. The fresh and fluffy bathrobes provided for your use will come in very handy for this.
The real star of the place was the direct access from our room to the very, very large verandah that faces the valley which spreads out below the homestead. This area is beautifully decked out with numerous lounges, tables, chairs and artworks. This spot is the perfect place to sit for breakfast or dinner or just to relax while soaking in the afternoon sun and absorbing the stunning views.
The other two accommodation options for guests is to stay in either of the adjacent cabins which are close to, but not attached to the actual homestead itself. 'The Cabin' is self contained with a kitchen, air conditioning for those warm summer days and a pot belly for those cosy winter nights. It has a queen size bed, two bunks, a sofa and a futon bed so this place could easily accommodate a family or a small group of friends.
The other option is 'The Belvedere'. This is a four bedroom cabin that's also fully self-contained with satellite TV, outdoor spa area and comfortable lounge area - again suited for larger groups or families.
As the name suggests, being a B&B, breakfast is included and as you would expect, is a delicious and filling way to start the day. Breakfast is served on the verandah overlooking the valley.
Being 18kms from Toodyay, the drive to dinner could be a bit tedious after a long day exploring the area, but fear not, the Black Wattle also has a delicious dinner menu which offers starters, mains and desserts followed by coffee and chocolates, all for around $40 per person and cooked by the chef who does an amazing job preparing everything to perfection.
Dinner, good conversation and a few wines watching the sun go down before heading off to the spa…sounds nice doesn't it? If you're wanting to explore the Avon Valley and wanting to spend more than a day, then do yourself a favour and consider the Black Wattle Retreat as your accommodation base for your trip.
