First opened in the suburb of Newtown, the Black Star Pastry branch within The Galleries shopping centre allows customers within Sydney CBD to enjoy the bakery's delicious cakes and pastries, among them the famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake. Much like its flagship branch, the place is very popular. There was a line of customers before the store was even opened.
First created in 2008, the Strawberry Watermelon Cake was initially made for a friend's wedding and quickly rose to fame, earning the moniker "the world's most Instagrammed Cake". It was well deserving of its fame. The layers of almond dacquoise were light and fluffy and partnered well by the rose-scented cream. The layer of watermelon added a bit of firmness and the top layer of strawberries was not too sweet. A scattering of pistachios and dried rose petals gave the cake its eye-catching appearance. Han's Patisserie in Adelaide is the only other place where we have tasted a Strawberry Watermelon Cake.

Black Star's Macadamia Brownie had a rich chocolatey flavour with the texture that you would expect from an American Brownie. There were also enough macadamias within the cake to add a delightful crunchy element. The cake is best enjoyed with a cup of coffee to balance out its rich taste.

Inspired by Portuguese Custard Tarts, their Custard Flan Tart consists of vanilla custard in a casing of puff pastry. The custard filling had a lovely soft texture without being too sweet and was contrasted well by the crisp and flaky pastry shell.

Though the Sydney CBD branch is quite small, the décor still had a casual and comfortable feel. Its location within Kinokuniya bookstore makes it a convenient place for shoppers to drop by if they desire cakes and pastries that are a bit different from those usually offered at Australian cafes.
