What makes a good coffee house? A simple question with a more complex answer. Many things can make a good coffee house but a combination of these things will make it great. A talented barista? Attentive and friendly staff? A pleasant location? Fine roasted coffee beans? A hearty hot coffee in winter and a cooling iced coffee in summer? I know what you're all thinking, it would be impossible for one place to achieve all of this, but you are pleasantly mistaken. I know the place, it is called Black Star Coffee.
Black Star is a cute and charismatic coffee house located on Thomas Street in the hip inner city Brisbane suburb of West End. All of the furniture is vintage including the chairs, tables and even couches.
This relaxed style attracts all sorts of people, especially those who want to sit solo and read or write. On a Saturday evening Black Star plays host to public reading so if you have a piece of writing you are proud of, head down to Thomas Street and read your writing aloud.
Coffee orders are placed at the counter and instead of being allocated the usual table number, Black Star gives you a figurine, for example, an action man or a little pink pig. How cool is that!
The menu also caters for rumbling tummies with a small food list which changes with the seasons. My personal favourite is the breakfast trifle. House-made muesli served with tonnes of Greek yogurt, loads of fresh seasonal fruit and gallons of silky sweet honey. Really the best way to start the day! To make it even better, the chef himself brings it out, making you feel super special.
Now, about the coffee, Black Star blends their own fair-trade beans to make the perfect brew. It is rich in flavour and best suited to someone who enjoys it strong. Even better is the fact that if you enjoy any of their blends you are able to buy your own bag. Oh yes, Black Star coffee every morning of the week.
But, what about in Summer? I walk to and from the coffee house and in Brisbane's sweltering Summer I can think of nothing worse than a hot cup of coffee after a face paced walk. So, what on earth do I drink? This may be an issue at other locations but lucky enough for me Black Star has a special house-made iced coffee.
It is pre-bottled which makes it perfect for the walk home and there are many varieties including soy, skim, strong, and de-caff. Now this iced-coffee is nothing like the ones I have tasted before that are inevitably drowned in whipped cream. It is silky smooth, so irresistibly creamy (without the addition of any whipped cream) and surprising refreshing. So, there you have it, head to Black Star coffee house if you are seeking perfection.
