Chill with Craft Beer, Wine and Music at Black Penny
Black Penny is a craft beer, wine, music and art bar, hidden away in the backblocks of Surry Hills on the way to Moore Park. We discovered it on a walk around the area on a Friday night.

Black Penny Craft Beer Wine Australian Food Art and Music Bar
Relaxed atmosphere with amazing drinks

The first thing that greets you is the not too loud music, the chilled atmosphere and the smiles of the people enjoying a relaxed drink and having a good time there. (The images don't show this, but I waited until people had moved before taking them. There were happy groups out on the pavement area as well as others just inside the entrance.)

Interesting Pub Art at Black Penny
Artistic walls add to the atmosphere

There is fun artwork on the walls and the design is casual without being too lounge-like but what really sets it aside is the great collection of craft beer bottles from around Australia, reasonable prices, along with some interesting wines.

They also have a couple of crafts on tap so if you'd prefer a just tapped one, these are worth trying too.

Grab a drink and chill for awhile

The manager was friendly and informative and she guided us on a number of possibilities for the night including what to expect in taste, texture and bouquet as well as suggesting the best for our particular palates.

We tried two beers from a Victorian craft beer producer and weren't disappointed. There was also an amazing Malbec (red wine) from the Margaret River area in Western Australia that was a huge surprise considering Argentina had been, up to this point, arguably the best place to get Malbec from. This one was up there with the best.

Enjoy some delicious and tasty Kangaroo tacos
Australian food at its finest

They also have some interesting food available. We tried the kangaroo tacos (with spicy yoghurt on the side) and enjoyed the sweet and juicy taste; definitely one to try. There are other interesting creations on the menu.

On other nights they have live music, specials on the food and other events that are worth checking out.

At the front of Black Penny
A friendly, welcoming and interesting bar

One of the things I like about visiting small bars is the interest and time they have to help their customers with their choices. Black Penny ticked all the boxes there for me.

They're open til midnight Friday and Saturday and 10am Sunday. This is another bar in the area to add to your do list.
