A modern playground between mountain and lake
Black Mountain Peninsula is one of those classic Canberra picnic areas - surrounded by mature trees and pristine-looking water.

The playground - or more correctly playgrounds - are nicely constructed modern play areas (no glaring safety issues and no tambark, just brightly-coloured safety foam, which literally adds a spring to one's step). They are designed to accommodate a range of ages, and there is also a wheelchair swing.

As well as BBQs and picnic tables, there are several low stone walls which look nice while providing handy extra seating with great visibility to the playgrounds.

The only down side is that in cooler seasons the birds can be remarkably aggressive in their attempts to get food - literally taking it off plates as people eat.

Younger kids who get bored quickly benefit from the ability to switch from one play area to another as the mood strikes.

I'd particularly recommend it as a destination or way station for cyclists - the whole area is lovely, and if you have a friend with a bike rack you can meet them there and hitch a ride home.
