It's not just black and white …it's love, family, gender, secrets and money in this hilarious and thought-provoking new romantic comedy by award-winning playwright, Nakkiah Lui.

Black is the New White[/LINK], playing at the Queensland Theatre, is the story of two Australian families – the Gibsons and the Smiths – who are brought together at Christmas through a love match... although politics and money raise their heads with superb comedic overtones.

The play is akin to Meet the Fockers Australian-style with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and hilarious slapstick that has the audience roaring with laughter.

The story is set around rising star Aboriginal lawyer Charlotte Gibson (Shari Sebbens), who is thrust into the media spotlight by winning a landmark Native Title case. Charlotte falls for Francis Smith (James Bell), an unemployed experimental classical composer, and a whirlwind romance follows.

So it's off to meet the parents, although Francis just happens to be white and Charlotte's father Ray (Tony Briggs), is a retired former political activist with his own firm views on what's best for his daughter. Francis's father Dennison (Geoff Morrell), a former conservative politician, has aspirations for his sons future.

The scene is perfectly set when both fathers meet and re-engage their personal and philosophical war… yet there are many other secrets that come out over wine and the expectations that Christmas Day brings. Religion and politics are not the only topics you shouldn't talk about at the dinner table but when it's Christmas Day, emotions get the better of this ensemble and spirals out of control to hilarious effect.

Despite all the differences, there is a community of families enjoying the benefits of a comfortable upper middle-class life, with the end line summing it all up perfectly.

The stellar cast of well-known Australian performers - with a multitude of theatre, film and television credits to their names - superbly brings out the comedic set-pieces with the meaningful undertone of the many messages presented. The programme profiles the cast as "the sort of people you would like to be in a room with" who are both interesting and funny.

Black is the New White is playing at Queensland Theatre until 17 February after its world premiere season at Sydney Theatre Company in 2017. Tickets are available from the QPAC website.
