Every Wednesday, the Queen Street mall hosts authentic Indigenous markets which are the result of a collaboration between Brisbane City Council and the Nguin Warrup (Black Drum) Arts and Cultural Organisation. Nguin Warrup is a non profit organisation that aims to increase awareness of Australia's Indigenous cultures through various community development programs, corporate consulting and advisory services.

From 11.00am - 2.00pm visitors are provided with the opportunity to peruse and purchase authentic, handcrafted items from a talented pool of local Indigenous artists and designers.

If you're there between 12.00pm and 1.00pm, you'll be fortunate enough to experience an authentic performance, as each week different aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers take to the Queen Street Mall Stage to entertain and share the richness of their culture through music, song and dance.
The Traditional Dance Program forms an invaluable and entertaining component of the market collaborative as it encourages young people to perform which serves to boost their confidence and pride. It also allows them to share their culture with the community - thus far over 200 young people have taken to the stage, and with the markets set to continue for at least another 2 years we are certain to see an increase in the number and diversity of performers. Recent performers included the Nunukul Yugerra Aboriginal Dance Group and the Keriba Mabaigal Torres Strait Islander women's dance group.
This market initiative is a gift to the local Brisbane community, which enables us to deepen both our understanding and appreciation of Australia's Indigenous culture and heritage.
