Dragon boat racing is a fantastic way to get fit whilst having fun. Dragon Boat racing is a fun cooperative team water sport. A standard crew consists of twenty paddlers in pairs, each facing towards the boats bow, one drummer/caller at the bow facing the paddlers and a sweeper or steerer at the rear end of the boat. Boats do vary in length however and therefore crew sizes will change according to your boat size. Dragon boats can be anywhere from 10 paddlers, up to more traditional boats, which can have fifty paddlers, including drummer and sweeper.

At 11:00am on Sunday the 20th of October, Adelaide's very own Black Dragon Boat Club is inviting you to come and try dragon Boat racing. Located down at the Aquatic Reserve in West Lakes, Black Dragons are hosting Dragon Boat racing as well as a BBQ to follow. The whole family is welcoming to participate (ages 12 years and upwards), so why not come down and see if this competitive and exciting water sport could be your thing.

The club advises that people arrive fifteen minutes before the racing to benefit from a team warm up session. All that is required is for you to wear your typical work out/gym clothing and footwear that you won't mind getting wet; it is boat racing after all. You'll want protective footwear that will keep your feet safe and given that it is an exertive sport you may want to bring a drink with you as well.

The club will be providing paddles for participants and also personal flotation devices if you feel it is required. Why not come out for a day of fun on the water and experience this ancient Chinese water sport and be a part of a human-powered team based watercraft.

It's free to join and if you're interested you can contact Chris on 0411 273 660. If it turns out to not be your type of sport you can at least cross Dragon Boat racing off of the bucket list and enjoy some delicious BBQ food and socialising afterwards.
